The Question of Ugly-Sexy
Ugly-Sexy (U-S) is, by no means, a modern phenomenon. In fact, so many years of wondering if such a thing exists should be reason enough to prove that U-S, as it is known in certain cliques, is a reality.
Firstly, however, what is Ugly-Sexy?
U-S can only be described as a condition that causes a person to be both unappealing (ugly is far too harsh a word, in my opinion), and oddly attractive at the same time. U-S people make you lust after them with genetic appeal whilst making you shudder with distaste.
As a woman, I can list, among the leading characters, people such as the alluring John Malkovich, Ed Harris and Hugo Weaving, all mature man of stature and renown.
At 50, Malkovich is, surprisingly, the most sexually attractive of all. Perhaps it is his sensual voice (with its deliciously lethargic tone), or the grace with which he realises every action. Perhaps it is simply the roles in which he is cast as an actor: the scheming Vicomte de Valmont in Dangerous Liasons and Gilbert Osmond in The Portrait of a Lady, the loving father and musketeer Athos in Randall Wallace's The Man in the Iron Mask or the portrayal of himself in the weird Being John Malkovich. What it is about him no one knows - does the romantic woman seek the suggested danger in him? The edge that brings every unpleasant personage he has to represent to life.
Certainly, actors that are frequently cast in the role of 'the baddy' are often U-S. The immensely attractive Alan Rickman and Jeremy Irons who were brothers in the blockbusters Die Hard and Die Hard with a Vengeance, respectively, both ooze sexuality, and disturbing as it may appear, I had held high hopes for a relationship between Jeremy Irons' and Liv Tyler's characters in Bernardo Bertolucci's Stealing Beauty. There is something about U-S that makes you want them, makes you want to share the experience of wanting them...
Nevertheless, disturbing or not, Ugly-Sexy returns with renewed strength every year through film, music and television, and it's here to stay.
So call me a 'granny snatcher' and a freak, but be honest.... here is a list of the world's favourite Ugly-Sexy males at this time. Look at it and tell me that you don't agree with at least one of the names on it....
